Sakhalin Taimen

This is the Wiki page for the Sakhalin Taimen found in Kamuibetsu National Park.

Description

The Sakhalin Taimen also known as the Japanese Huchen or Stringfish, is a large species of freshwater fish found in the lakes and large rivers of Far Eastern Russia and Hokkaido, Japan. Their population has dwindled, leading to them becoming critically endangered.

The loss of more than half of their original habitat due to agriculture, urbanization, and oil and gas development has provided significant pressure to the population of the species. Other considerable pressures include bycatch in the commercial salmon fisheries of Russia and Japan, as well as illegal fishing practices. In Japan, this species is bred for game-fishing at fish farms, and are available for purchase.
