The Carver-Washington Half Dollar was minted in silver from 1951 until 1954, and was thought by some to have been made to help curb the spread of communism among African-American communities. These coins did not sell particularly well, with thousands of them being returned to the mint for melting or held by banks in order to be sold for a small premium
