About
Hokkaido was known as Ezochi until the Meiji Restoration. Through colonial practices, Ezochi was annexed into Japanese territory, and renamed Hokkaido. Hokkaido became equal with other prefectures in 1947, when the revised Local Autonomy Law became effective.
