The Hippopotamus, is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are considered the second largest land animal on Earth (first place goes to the elephant), with adults averaging 3,300 lb (1,500 kg) for bulls (males) and 2,900 lb (1,300 kg) for cows (females). Hippos measure 9.5-6.6 ft (2.90-5.05 m) long, including a tail of about 1.15-1.84 ft (35-56 cm) in length and 4.3-5.4 ft (1.30-1.65 m) tall at the shoulder, with males and females ranging 4.6-5.4 ft (1.40-1.65 m) and 4.3-4.8 ft (1.30-1.45 m) tall at the shoulder respectively. Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it is capable of running 19 mph (30 km/h) over short distances. Males measure around 11.5 ft (3.5m) long and 5 ft (1.5m) tall, and can weigh up to 7055 lb (3,200kg), that’s as much as three small cars! Hippos are most active at night, when they forage for food. They are herbivores, and eat mostly grass – in just one night, they can consume up to 77 lb (35kg) of it!
