Ostriches are large flightless birds. They are the heaviest living birds, and lay the largest eggs of any living land animal. They stand up to a massive 9 ft (2.7m) tall and weigh as much as 350 lb (159kg); which is around 3 ft (1m) taller than the average man, and heavier than two men combined! With the ability to cover 16 ft (5m) in a single stride, and run up to 43.5 mph (70 km/h), they are the fastest birds on land. This brilliant bird’s strong legs don’t just carry them where they want to go, they’re super effective as self-defense. If an ostrich is cornered by a hungry predator, such as a lion, cheetah, leopard or hyena, they can kick with a force powerful enough to kill! Each two-toed foot is armed with a ten centimeter sharp claw for added punishment.
