The Lewis & Clark Exposition Gold Dollar was created as part of the government’s participation in the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition held in 1905 in Portland, Oregon. The coin was designed by Charles E Barber, and sold particularly poorly, leading to less than a tenth of its authorized mintage being used.
