Rataskep

About

Hokkaido is not only the home of the Ainu, but also their food, an incredibly distinct selection of dishes that diverge from those more traditionally associated with Japanese cuisine; One such dish is rataskep.

Translated literally, rataskep means ‘mixed food’. Wild vegetables and beans are stewed until soft and mashed with bear or fish oils and a small amount of salt.

Rataskep was made as an everyday food, as well as for offerings at ceremonies, as it was considered to be sacred.
