The Springbok or Springbuck is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in south and southwest Africa. A slender, long-legged antelope, the Springbok is up to 28-34 in (71-86 cm) tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 60-93 lb (27-42 kg). Both sexes have a pair of black, 14-20 in (35-50 cm) horns that curve backwards. The Springbok is the national animal of South Africa. The common name ‘springbok’ comes from the Afrikaans words spring (‘jump’) and bok (‘antelope’ or ‘goat’); the first recorded use of the name dates to 1775.
