Description
The Ayu Sweetfish is an amphidromous fish and the only species in its genus. It is a relative of the Smelt. The name ‘sweetfish’ was inspired by the sweet taste of its flesh. The Sweetfish typically lives to around a year old, and as such is also written as nengyo (‘year-fish’) in Japanese, however can live beyond two or even three years old. The ayu is the prefectural fish of Gunma and Gifu Prefectures.
