The Whimbrel is a large wader ranging from 15-19 in (37-47 cm) in length, 30-35 in (75-90 cm) in wingspan, and 0.6-1.0 lb (270-493 g) in weight. It is mainly grayish brown, with a white back and rump, and a long kinked, curved bill. The English name ‘Whimbrel’ is descriptive of the bird’s call, comparing it to a whimper. Numenius, the genus assigned to Whimbrel, means ‘new moon’ in Greek, a reference to the bird’s bill shape which resembles a crescent moon.
