The Great Gray Owl is a very large owl, documented as the world’s largest species of owl by length. Their length ranges from 24-33 in (61-84 cm), averaging 28 in (72 cm) for females and 26 in (67 cm) for males. Despite weighing on average only 2.5 lb (1.1 kg), they can break through snow packed hard enough to support large humans. The call of the adult is a series of very deep, rhythmic hoots, which is usually given in correlation to their territories or in interactions with their offspring. At other times, adults are normally silent. The young may chatter, shriek, or hiss. Tame owls may produce higher-pitched hoots when given food by humans.
